3 Ways Denny's Tumblr is Doing Social Media Right

Hopefully by now you’ve come across the famous blogging platform Tumblr- popular among teens and young adults alike. Memes, reaction GIFS and humour-based text posts are just some of the content you would expect to find on the site. What you wouldn’t expect to come across however are posts by well-known brands, especially restaurant chains.

Enter Denny’s, who are not only present on the platform but have reached ‘Tumblr famous’ status thanks to their legion of followers. Given Tumblr’s user demographics, one might scratch their head in confusion wondering what a brand like Denny’s could possibly be doing on a site like Tumblr.
Tumblr user sprawlerr found out the hard way when he posed this very question and received a witty comeback from Denny’s themselves:

A reply which garnered over 170k notes and prompted him to eventually delete his account (presumably due to playful user taunts- yes this a common occurrence on the site)
If you think Denny’s reply was a bit on the unprofessional side, then you would be absolutely correct. However, believe it or not- witty posts and comebacks are a prominent part of Tumblr’s culture. Denny’s know this and act accordingly, bringing us to the first reason they are doing social right.

1.They know their target audience and market accordingly

Denny’s have jumped aboard Tumblr’s culture of sarcasm, playful banter and general silliness in order to fit right in. Best of all, everything from their theme to the content they create markets their brand whilst remaining highly engaging and entertaining.

Since blatant advertising would not sit well with Tumblr users, Denny’s (not so subtle) marketing is done via the ever popular GIFS, images and text post format. In fact, their posts are reblogged thousands of times within minutes of being posted, vouching for how popular their content is on the site.

After all, who could resist the urge to reblog some of these gems?

Well, they certainly appeal to the tumblr demographic!

Despite advertising on the site, Denny’s are careful to avoid constantly bombarding their followers with one-way messages. On the contrary, they take the time to not only reply to questions but follow back and reblog content from users. Actions like these go a long way in making customers feel valued while make them realise there indeed is a face behind the name-which brings us to our next point.

2. They hired the right person for the role

At the peak of its popularity, Denny’s Tumblr was being managed by then 23 year old Amber Gordon (via a creative agency) Not only did Amber fit perfectly  into the age group Tumblr caters to, she had the necessary sense of humour and content creation skills to make the job truly her own. It was clear that Amber loved what she did based on the quality and the level of creativity in her posts, proving that passion is integral to effective social media management.

Delegating management to the wrong person could end up hurting your brand in the long run as followers are quick to sense disengagement and do not respond to boring, predictable content. We’ve all come across Facebook pages that resort to posting those unrelated ‘inspirational quotes’, tired humour memes that have been around for ages or even worse, automate their Facebook page so their Tweets are automatically reposted on Twitter. Please don’t be that page, tweets belong on Twitter, no one wants to see them rehashed on their news feeds.

If you get the right person to run the right marketing channels, you’re half way there!

3. They cross promote and repurpose content

What do you do when you’re famous on Tumblr and the content you post goes viral within hours? You cross-promote your other platforms of course! And that’s exactly what Denny’s do on Tumblr.
Their tumblr page prominently features links to their website as well as their other social media channels.

From time to time, they post screenshots of their Tweets (many of which have gone viral) promotions on Facebook, as well as links to their Youtube channel. Expecting the same quality of entertainment, their tumblr fans are quick to follow them on other channels and Denny’s certainly don’t disappoint. One of their most famous Tweets, which spoke to the controversy surrounding cultural appropriation at the famous Coachella festival, garnered over 10k retweets.

The key to cross promotion however is finding the right balance. Different content works well on different social media channels, however if you can find a way to repurpose existing content, especially visual content, you can boost their reach through cross promotion.

So take a leaf out of Denny’s book, thoroughly research your audience, use each social media channel as intended, ensure the right people are running your accounts and if your audience love your content, feed them more great content from your other channels!

Characteristics of a High Performing Team

Many teams in the working world have various symptoms of dysfunction. You can observe all kinds of back biting, laziness, sabotage, lack of support, passive aggressive behavior, grandstanding, and numerous other maladies if you study the inner workings of teams.
Yet some teams are able to rise above the petty problems and reach a level of performance that is consistently admirable.

I have studied working teams for decades and have concluded that there are four common denominators successful teams share.

If your team has these four elements, you are likely enjoying the benefits of a high performance team.

If you do not see these things, then chances are you are frustrated with your team experience.

A common goal –

This is the glue that keeps people on the team pulling in the same direction. If people have disparate goals, their efforts will not be aligned, and organizational stress will result.
If people on your team are fighting or showing other signs of stress, the first thing to check is if the goal is really totally shared by everyone.

Often people give the official goal lip service but have a hidden different agenda. Eventually this discontinuity will come out in bad behaviors.

Trust –
When there is high trust between team members, the environment is real.

Where trust is low, people end up playing games to further their own agendas. Achieving high trust is not simple, nor is it the main topic of this blog article.

I have written extensively on the creation of trust elsewhere. One caveat is that trust is a dynamic commodity within a team.

You need to keep checking the trust level and bolster it when it slips. Constant vigilance is required.

Good Leadership –
A team without a leader is like a ship without a rudder.

But the leader does not have to be the anointed formal leader. Often a kind of distributed leadership or informal leadership structure can make teams highly effective.

But beware if there is a poor leader who is formally in charge of a team. This is like the kiss of death. No team can perform consistently at a high level if the official leader is blocking progress at every turn. The best that can be achieved is an effective work-around strategy.

A Solid Charter –

I have coached hundreds of teams and discovered that the ones with an agreed-upon team charter always out perform ones that have wishy-washy ground rules.

A good charter will consider what each member brings to the team, so the diversity of talents can be used.

Second, it will contain the specific goals that are tangible and measurable.

Third, it will have a set of agreed upon behaviors so people know what to expect of each other and can hold each other accountable.

Fourth, the team needs a set of ground rules for how to operate. Ground rules can be detailed or general, it really does not matter, but some ground rules are required.

Finally, and this is the real key, there need to be specific agreed-upon consequences for members of the team who do not abide by the charter.

The most common problem encountered within any team is a phenomenon called “social loafing.”

This is where one or more members step back from the work and let the others do it. This inequity always leads to trouble, but it is nearly always avoidable if the consequences for social loafing are stated clearly and agreed upon by all team members at the outset.

People will not knowing slack off if they have already agreed to the negative impact on themselves, or if they do it once and feel the pain they will not do it again.

This last element of successful teams is the most important ingredient. When it is missing, you are headed for trouble eventually.

There are numerous other elements that can help teams succeed, but if you have the above four elements, chances are your team is doing very well.

All high performance teams have these four elements in play everyday. Make sure your team has these as well.

Amazing Photoshop Tips For Web Design

Being a web design hero isn't about trendy effects, but sound design fundamentals and knowing your way around Photoshop, says Dan Rose.

The phrase 'I wish I were better at Photoshop' is uttered by web designers young and old. Yet there's something inherently wrong with that statement. It implies that our proficiency in a software program would make us better designers.
The reality is that just knowing the basics of Photoshop is sufficient for web design heroics. What if we took a step back from adding noise and insetting text to evaluate our efficiency using Photoshop?
Too simple for you, Level 42 PSD Sage? Not your cup of tea, Fireworks Fanboy? I beg to differ.

01. Sketch first

You can really let those doodles fly with 4-up templates, with or without grids

Ironically, the most essential Photoshop tip doesn't even involve turning on your computer. I can guarantee you'll spend less time playing around with layout by doing some sketches. Buy a solid sketchbook or print out your own templates (raincreativelab.com/paperbrowser) and go to town doing some rough layouts. Then translate those sketches in Photoshop.

02. Use a grid system

978.gs provides templates for multiple widths (mobile, small screen, roomy)

Alignment and relationship of size are two attributes your designs should address. Set yourself up with a grid system from the get-go. Most grid systems have PSD templates with guides for columns and gutters. Here's a bunch: 960px978px1140px.

03. Turn on snapping

There truly isn't anything worse than to be off by one pixel. Turn on snapping by going to View>Snap and then View>Snap to>Guides. If you've implemented a grid system, snapping to guides is genius. With less squinting at the screen, you won't need those trendy designer glasses.

04. Organise your PSD

It may seem like a hassle if you're not used to it, but naming layers and using folders is what all the cool kids are doing

Is it a pain to name your layers and put them in folders? Sure. Most designers buy in to the logic that you'll spend more time doing so, but there are reasons that's not true. If you work by yourself, you'll save time searching for things later on. If you work with others, you'll be doing them a favour when they search. If you name layers as you go along, it's not hard to keep up with it as opposed to doing it after.

05. Master shortcuts

The key to Photoshop stardom is efficiency. It's not just knowing how to do something, but how to do something quickly so that you're using valuable time executing a function. Some specific shortcuts to know? Start with Save for Web:Cmd+Opt+Shift+S, Image Size: Cmd+Opt+I, Canvas Size:Cmd+Opt+C. Don't forget Levels: Cmd+L, and Hue/Saturation: Cmd+U.

06. Be subtle - everything in moderation

Add filters such as noise and drop shadows with ease as if barely using them

As designers, we tend to discredit our audience's ability to perceive the effect we're trying to achieve. So our response is to add too much noise, make harsh gradients and use too much contrast. The perfect blend is when you use effects with some grace, and, more importantly, self control.

07. Utilise layer comps & smart objects

Unfortunately, Photoshop doesn't have a great system for compositions such as navigation states. However, you can leverage Layer Comps (Window>Layer Comps) to make versions of layouts fairly well. Smart Objects (Layer>Smart Object>Convert to Smart Object) will compile multiple elements into a file that can be edited outside of your PSD.

08. Keep integral shapes vector smart objects

There's nothing worse than going to 'make the logo bigger' and realising you can't because it's a rasterised graphic in your PSD, or trying to resize a button only to find that it's no longer a shape. The solution is to keep these shapes in vector format, and you can do that by importing them as Vector Smart Objects or converting them to Smart Objects before you rasterise them.

09. Use masks intelligently

Globalising masks makes for some sweet Photoshop efficiency. For instance, if you have five slider images in your design, group them and put a mask on the folder instead of each individual layer. It's a far superior solution than sifting through 20 masks, not knowing which ones do what.

10. Refine masks for easy hair silhouetting

Frizzy hair? Fear no more. Use the Refine Mask tool instead of spending countless hours silhouetting by hand

Who doesn't loathe having to silhouette hair? Here's a trick that works well on various sizes of images, no matter how crazy the hairdo. Make a rough mask of the person, then go to Select>Refine Mask (Refine Edge in versions previous to CS5). Play with the Radius and watch the magic unfold.

11. Perceive drop shadows accurately

Piggybacking on the last tip, the sign of an amateur designer is when you see drop shadows far too dark. It translates that the object is under a spotlight. Probably not the case. Be sure to decrease the opacity, and better yet, use a colour that's a dark hue of the background behind it instead of black.

12. Teach yourself the pen tool

PSDTuts has a very comprehensive tutorial on how to master the pen tool

It's worth the time to get good at using the pen tool. It's one of those things we tend to avoid, but if you want to pull off some crisp masks or add illustration to your designs, the pen tool is your weapon of choice. Brush up your skills with this tutorial.

13. Sharpen photos using high pass

You might need to massage it, but High Pass with an Overlay can revive those crummy inherited bitmaps

Ready for some Photoshop Magic? So, you've received a low-res photo from your client, and it's just too blurry to use. Duplicate the layer, then go to Filter>Other>High Pass. Choose something low (around 2.0) and then set that layer's Blending Mode to Overlay. If it's too crisp, decrease the opacity. Results may vary.

14. Be consistent

0to255.com is a brilliant tool by Shaun Chapman. Enter a hex value to see shades darker and lighter, all easy to copy

Five different blues, and none of them are the one from the brand guide? Be sure to check the colours being used, especially when exporting images. Another handy tool for colour accuracy is 0to255.com, which provides hex values that arharmoniously lighter and darker of a given colour.

15. Don't default to default settings

You'll know when you see a drop shadow whose settings haven't been touched. Work those settings every time

One of the hardest things to ward off is Photoshop autonomy. If you're treating the Effects panel like a checklist of desired styles, you're most likely not crafting their settings to a reasonable state. The default settings are generally harsh in order to show their appearance. Soften the amounts and change the angles.

16. It's in the details

An integral part to perfecting your craft in Photoshop is to make your design 'pixel perfect'. Go back through your PSD, looking for blurry edges on rounded rectangles or inconsistent line weights. It pays to take the time in Photoshop perfecting your layout (rather than in HTML/CSS).

17. Rewrite history

Isn't it such a bummer when you open up the History panel and you need 21 steps back, only to see it stops at the last 20? Prevent that from happening again by going to Preferences>Performance and increasing the value for History States. You web design superheroes don't need to use the History panel though, do you?

18. Personalise your workspace

You can save your menus and keyboard shortcuts, as well as the panel layout by creating your own workspace

Photoshop's not the boss of you, pixelcrafter. If you prefer having your tools on the right and only your Layers panel open, do it. You can even change the colour around the canvas by right-clicking on it. Save your workspace via the menu in the top right of the application.

19. Organise your files

Much like naming your layers and folders, naming your files appropriately prevents much strife. Isn't it hard to distinguish which PSD is the 'latest' when they have descriptors like 'NEWEST_round4.psd' or 'FINAL_USE_THIS_ONE.psd'? Keep one PSD and be done with it. Archive the rest if you really need it.

20. Be original and fight trends

The good news is that we web designers have used Photoshop to create some beautiful techniques. That's also the bad news, because we're prone to copy one another's new hotness. Photoshop's a wonderful tool, but use with care. Just because you can put a gradient on something doesn't mean you should. Experiment with the settings and start your own trends.

What Marketers Need To Know To Thrive In Today's Market

Last week's BMA14, the annual conference of the Business Marketing Association, featured useful presentations about b-to-b marketing, business growth and storytelling. Here are just a few highlights from the conference, addressing how marketers targeting businesses can better position their brands in today's markets.

1. Don't use yesterday's playbook to define tomorrow. The key to being different and continuing success in markets is to constantly change. This means innovating, reconstructing and rethinking ideas. Build on previous successful strategies so those can become even more effective, and challenge yourself to disrupt the patterns of the past to differentiate your material for clients.

2. Disruption should be relevant and unexpected, but not loud. Disrupting a market doesn't need to be loud and obvious -- it needs to be relevant to your target audience and unexpected. It should give a new lens and insight for the client to rethink the product. Disruption should respect the target audience while continuing to expand the brand and brand values. Disruption should be personal and aim to give people what they want.

3. Use snackable bites. Think about your target audience and give them what they want. Don't bog them down with long pages of words and tons of information. Use small phrases and key terms as "snackable bites," which are more digestible for your audience. Let these bites facilitate the audience's engagement with the information and entice them to read further.

4. Push the envelope. The biggest benefit of disruption is differentiation. Creating something unique and effective by disrupting current standards will pay off. Don't be afraid to take risks and challenge yourself; the best disruption often starts out as an unpopular idea. Continue to develop your brand by pushing the envelope and trying new things.

5. Go mobile. Today is the best time to be marketing because businesses have the capability to be in the right place at the right time -- in people's pockets. With the rapid technological advancements with mobile devices, people are now spending more time on their mobiles than anywhere else. This means incorporating mobile development into marketing because that is where the customers are. However, just because people are on their mobile does not mean they want your message. Targeting a specific audience is the key to being successful with a mobile marketing plan.

6. Quality is paramount. People carry mobile devices almost everywhere, making them a great way to connect with the clients and gain feedback. Ratings and comments are crucial to business because they can show your company exactly how you should improve, what is working and what isn't. This facilitates a speedy turnover of information, pushes constant innovation and allows you to represent your brand well. Use the consumer's feedback to increase the quality of your product and allow for changes and development in the brand. Constantly look for ways to continue to redevelop the product for better quality and service.

7. "Respectation." The idea of respectation is to respect the expectations of your client. Understand their needs, concerns and values so you can give them the best product and most satisfaction. Remember that price is what you pay but value is what you get. Consumers return to your brand for the experience and service you provide them, rather than cheap prices. Make an experience different and unique in order to keep clients returning for business. Define the brand value that best exemplifies the needs of the consumer.

8. Count Numbers and Emotions. In marketing, there is an emphasis on numbers and data, which is important for business but it isn't necessarily the most important thing. Don't discount the emotion of marketing and the importance of customer experience. Being focused on the metrics may cause you to miss the emotional impacts of your product and the emotions are what draw people in and keep them with the company. Phil Clement (CMO of Aon) discussed how cognitive science is driving modern marketing research, which means marketing needs to appeal to both the head and the heart. Things that touch the head and the heart are the things that stick. Build two marketing plans: a qualitative, articulate marketing plan and a back-pocket emotional plan.
